• UALC, Adult Education Class of 2024: Be yourself

    Among the many lessons learned in high school, personal responsibility is near the top of the list for Adult Education and Alternative Learning Center students.

     

    “I learned that the way that your life plays out is solely based on the actions that you take and the opportunities or challenges that you might face,”  commencement speaker Jayson Ballard said. “I realized you can’t let someone push you into a field you don't want to be in, and don't surround yourself with people that can jeopardize the future you have planned. Be yourself and don't let anyone try to change that.”

     

    The members of the Class of 2024 received their diplomas at a ceremony Saturday at the O’Rena at Oakland University.

    UALC Administrator Mark McLoughlin offered three pieces of advice to graduates: Believe in your own potential; Act with passion and determination; Remember along your journey to give back. 

    “Each of you has overcome various challenges and obstacles to reach this special point today in your life,” McLoughlin said.  “Though many, maybe even yourself may have doubted you would reach this point, you are to be commended for this achievement.” 

    Superintendent Robert Monroe reminded graduates with the many titles they carry – son or daughter, sibling, Falcon – they now add a new one.

    “Today, you will become a Utica Community Schools graduate. It is a title that I invite you to wear with pride,” he said.

    Board of Education President Dr. Mary Thomas said graduates will continue to have the benefit of their community and parents as they navigate the road forward. 

    “In life, lean into your parents, guardians, family, and friends when you find yourself lost or in unfamiliar territory,” she said.  “In partnership with you, they will look at your available routes to guide you to the path that makes the most sense in that instance.”
