• Utica High School grads mark a time of change

     

    Utica High School graduates can only think of their own school bell to appreciate the changing nature of time.

    “As I’m sure most of you noticed, this year, our bell sound was altered,” said senior speaker Dani Cesario. “As we step out into the world beyond these school walls, we must carry with us the lessons of that changing bell. Let it be a constant reminder that our journey is defined by our ability to grow and harmonize with the changes in life. No matter what challenges lie ahead, we have the power within us to rise above, to adapt, and to ultimately succeed.”

    The members of the Class of 2024 received their diplomas at a ceremony Sunday at the O’Rena at Oakland University. 

    Valedictory speaker Mia Jalics said the Class of 2024 should thank their parents, teachers and each other for their success.

    "Utica High school will always be a part of our collective past, and now our future awaits,” she said.

    Principal Tim Youngblood spoke to the accomplishments of the Class of 2024:

    • 10 MAC championship
    • State and national MIFA, DECA HOSA
    • Division one Band rating
    • Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association honors
    • The Michigan Journalist of the Year
    • Two national merit commended students
    • Two members of the Macomb All-academic dream team

    “This has been a special class,” Youngblood said. “Most importantly, they are great human beings who care about each other.”

    Superintendent Robert Monroe reminded graduates with the many titles they carry – son or daughter, sibling, Chieftain – they now add a new one.

    “Today, you will become a Utica Community Schools graduate. It is a title that I invite you to wear with pride,” he said.

    Board of Education vice president Denyeal Nesovski said graduates will continue to have the benefit of their community and parents as they navigate the road forward.

    “In life, lean into your parents, guardians, family, and friends when you find yourself lost or in unfamiliar territory,” she said.  “In partnership with you, they will look at your available routes to guide you to the path that makes the most sense in that instance.”
