Frequently Asked Questions
What are the specialty programs?
The secondary programs include the Stevenson Manufacturing, Automation and Design Engineering (MADE) academy, the Utica Health and Human Services Academy (HHS), Gene L. Klida Utica Academy for International Studies (U.A.I.S.), the Utica Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology (UCMST) and the Utica Center for Science and Industry (UCSI). The specialty programs are unique offerings designed to supplement the district's comprehensive high schools. The programs are among a portfolio of choices to meet the individual needs, talents and interests of our students.
Who is eligible to apply?
The district is committed to maintaining a high quality education that provides excellence, equity and access for all students, as a foundation for successful participation in our democratic society. Eligibility for the secondary specialty programs is established through Board of Education Policy 6275, available at this link. All UCS students have the opportunity to have access to secondary specialty programs through an open and accessible process, regardless of race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, language, disability and/or gender.
How do I apply?
Applications are generally available in mid-January. Information will be shared through junior high and district parent updates.
How is selection determined?
All students who meet program requirements have an opportunity to be selected for the program. Residents of the district and non-resident (Schools of Choice) students currently enrolled in eighth grade are eligible to apply for Specialty Programs. The district will not accept a new non-resident student beyond grade eight in Secondary Specialty Programs unless all qualified district and existing non-resident (Schools of Choice) applicants have been accepted and there are open seats. Students entering the district in grades 10-12, with similar specialty program experience, may be considered for entrance if seats are available.
