- What is the difference special education programs make for students and the community?
- Special education programs make a huge difference to students and the community to ensure all students are being supported with the resources they need to be most successful in school and out in the world. Everyone learns at their own pace and in their own way but when special education students are able to be in an environment that is most beneficial to them, you are able to see more progress and success in their daily living and educational lives when supported correctly.
- What are you most proud of as a special education teacher?
- As a special education teacher, I am most proud of witnessing and being a part of the students AHA/big moments. The days can be challenging and sometimes harder to see progress but when I get to see a student achieve a task that we have been working on, it is so rewarding. However, I am also proud of being their safe person/place and a resource for them as well as their families.
- What drives you as a special education teacher?
- Advocating, supporting, and showing my students the love from a teacher is what continues to drive me each day and year. The students I teach may have a disability and require extra support, but it DOES NOT mean they aren't capable of success or feeling valued as a student in the school or community.
- Personally, I feel like I am making an impact by meeting my students where they are and making sure we have a good relationship before anything else. When past parents reach out to tell me how their child still talks about, asks for me, how much they miss me and how the time spent with me has helped get their child to where they are now, it really warms my heart and reminds me that I am doing what I was meant to do.
