Frequently Asked Questions about Jeannette
What is the cell phone policy at Jeannette?
Students may have their cell phones at school, but they cannot be SEEN NOR HEARD at any point during the school day, including lunch. Students must have access to cell phones in case of an emergency, but they may not use them, pull them out, or allow notification sounds to go off while they’re in the building. If a teacher allows a student to use a phone during instruction, that is allowed, but that is up to the teacher, and before the students leave that classroom, the phone must be put away.
Is there a dress code at Jeannette?
Yes! There is a dress code that must be adhered to. Students must wear clothing that is not shorter than their fingertips when their arms are straight down at their sides. Clothing must not show or promote activities that are illegal (such as drug or alcohol use, or violence). Students may not wear low-cut tops or tops that show their midriff. Hoods and hats may not be worn while in the school building. All other dress code items can be found on the UCS website by clicking on the “Handbook” links on the right side of the page.
Is it a requirement for Jeannette students to wear ID cards?
Yes! All students will get 2 ID cards and lanyards to start out the year. They must wear their ID on their Jeannette lanyard every single school day. A good practice is to take the ID off at the end of each school day and put it in the same place in their backpack so they can easily take it out the next morning and put it on before they walk into the school building.
Is attendance to school required?
YES, YES, YES! Not only is it required, but it is important that your child comes to school EVERY DAY unless they absolutely can’t come due to illness or emergency. Your child is responsible for any work that they miss if they are absent, and it is very easy to fall behind and for their grades to drop due to absences. If you or your child is experiencing trouble getting to school, please contact their counselor at 586-797-3300 to discuss the circumstances.
For 9th graders, missing school could lead to a loss of high school credit. If a student misses 11 days or school or more, they lose credit for that class, and they will have to make it up in summer school.
Do I have to call the school if my child is absent?
YES, YES, YES!! A PARENT must call in a child who will be absent for any reason. The number for the attendance line is 586-797-3399. You must call in every day to say that your child is absent.
Do you allow early dismissals from or late arrivals to school?
If your child MUST leave early or arrive late, you must call the main office to arrange that. No early dismissals are allowed within a half hour of the end of the school day, which is 2:11 PM.
Can my child buy lunch at school?
Yes! Breakfast and lunch for all students in Michigan is again free this year. Your child has access to
healthful meals while they are in the building. All students have to do is go to the food service line in
the cafeteria, show their ID card, and they can get breakfast and lunch. Breakfast is available in the
cafeteria in the mornings beginning at 6:50 AM, and all students will be able to get lunch during
their designated lunch hour. Can my child order food to be delivered to school for lunch?
No! No food deliveries for students will be accepted.
Am I responsible if my child damages their laptop?
Yes! You must pay for repairs if your child damages their laptop. Laptop insurance costs $20 and must be purchased each year. Laptop insurance can’t be bought after damage has occurred and be applied to that damage. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you purchase laptop insurance. If you have unpaid fines from laptop damage, it could affect your child’s ability to walk at graduation, along with other negative impacts. My child has a damaged laptop or charger. What do I do?
Your child must see the Media Office Clerk located in the Media Center during school hours to get it replaced. Please note there may be a fee placed in your child's PowerSchool account for replacing any broken materials. For virtual students, please schedule an appointment by calling the Media Office Clerk at 586-797-3385. For additional information please visit https://jjhmediacenter.my.canva.site/
There are no early dismissals after 1:30pm.
